SOUTH AFRICAN ANIMAL SANCTUARY ALLIANCE
SAASA is the current winner of the Lilizela Tourism Visitor Experience of the Year Award – ‘Wildlife Encounters’, Skål International Sustainable Tourism Award, Overall winner of the World Responsible Tourism Award and in the category ‘Best Animal Welfare Initiative‘ – South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA) was formerly known as Touch a Monkeys Heart Foundation (TAMHF) – A not for gain organization which in the early days was the sole custodian of all the monkeys at Monkeyland in Plettenberg Bay. TAMHF required a change in its aims and mission when the owners of Monkeyland opened Birds of Eden, and more recently acquired Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary. With monkeys, apes, birds, wild cats, snakes, zebra and buck now part of the mix, it became necessary to re-brand the organization.
SAASA continues to perform the vital task of maintaining wildlife populations in as near as possible to wild environments, except these days it’s efforts are not only directed at primates but several other species as well. The aims, mission, short medium and long term goals of the organization remain un-changed.
