Langa Lapu Fabrics

Langa Lapu is Xhosa for “sun cloth” and we bring some of our abundant African sunshine and vibrant colour into your homes. Our exotic and colourful fabrics are handmade in South Africa combining our lush tropical vegetation with the African elements of earth, wind, fire and water.

Langa Lapu is about Pru and her team who focus their attention on:

  • The production of fabrics and crafts
  • The running of the shop
  • The buying of other fabric and craft from Africa
  • The exporting of the fabrics all over the world
  • Attending international quilt markets
  • Working with eco-friendly principles by recycling using non-toxic dyes and composting leaves.

The Sun Dyeing Process

  • This is a totally hands-on affair; from the collection of leaves, seedpods and ferns to the laying out of the fabric on the grass and the designing – there is a distinct lack of the machinery usually associated with fabric production, and every single piece is a one-off creation.
  • Pru and her team work only on the hottest days, with no wind to disturb the leaves. The special light-sensitive dyes do their work over a couple of hours, and only when the leaves are removed can one see how the sunlight has affected the fabric.
  • For this reason, each fabric is unique and as such can never be reproduced exactly. This is what makes Langa Lapu so very special.
